Influence of liquid mercury on the structure of nanocrystalline nickel

The data on the degradation of nanocrystalline nickel (nc-Ni) in t he presence of liquid mercury are presented. Mercury etches nc-Ni on grain boundaries and simultaneously a new phase Ni-Hg appears. Crack nucleation takes place in an amalgam area.
