Summary:The nitrogenation behavior of a Sm-Fe-Ta based alloy which can be used for the preparation of Sm-Fe-N based permanent magnets was studied. Diffusion experiments on thin polished plates provided the nitrogenation processing parameters. Thermomagnetic analysis of partially and fully nitrided powders showed that the required nitrogenation times were lower than the calculated values. This is attributed to the powder condition.
