He ion dominance in the high-latitude upper ionosphere as observed in “active” experiment

Ion density measurements using the Bennett-type mass spectrometer aboard the Intercosmos-24 satellite (I=82.6°, P=510 km, A=2500 km) were analyzed from about 130 full orbits from December 1989 to March 1991. He + dominance has been studied for regions of the polar hole, invariant latitudes larger th...

description Ion density measurements using the Bennett-type mass spectrometer aboard the Intercosmos-24 satellite (I=82.6°, P=510 km, A=2500 km) were analyzed from about 130 full orbits from December 1989 to March 1991. He + dominance has been studied for regions of the polar hole, invariant latitudes larger than 70°. He + dominance occurs in the winter dusk ionosphere (solar zenith angle χ>100°), mainly for night sector at 1000 to 2400 km heights; it seems to be a feature of winter solstice, at least for periods of high solar activity. In regions of He + dominance, He + concentrations in the range of 2.10 7–2.10 9 m −3 were observed. The role of solar zenith angle and convection processes as well as dependence on universal time is shown.
