Description
Summary:Using an image analysis technique, the deformation field in double-edged cracked specimens of an open-cell aluminum foam has been measured. The measured deformation field is consistent with a simple model in which failure occurs by tensile yield of the uncracked ligament and localized shearing (over a distance of about one cell) at the crack tip. An expression for notch strengthening based on this model provides good agreement with experimentally observed notch-strengthening results for both open- and closed-cell foams.
