Summary:A diode-pumped Tm:Yb:YLF laser was tuned with a Lyot filter from 1.492 to 1.505 mu m and passively Q-switched with a Co:LMA single crystal saturable absorber. Stable pulse trains with pulse duration down to 200 ns and pulse repetition frequency of 3 kHz were obtained because of a cavity with a high Q-value. A complete modeling of the Q-switching of the Tm:Yb:YLiF sub(4) laser was developed to predict the laser performance in terms of pulse duration and energy, and to increase its efficiency.
