Summary: | The paper reports on the crystal structure determination and magnetic measurements of the Gd sub 2 Co sub 2 Al, Gd sub 2 Co sub 2 Ga and Gd sub 1.4 Co sub 3 In sub 2.7 phases. Gd sub 2 Co sub 2 Ga and the new intermetallic compound Gd sub 2 Co sub 2 Al crystallise in the Pr sub 2 Ni sub 2 Al structure, while single crystal data show that Gd sub 14 Co sub 3 In sub 27 is closely related to the Lu sub l4 Co sub 2 In sub 3 phase, but with a different occupation of the Co and In sites. Gd sub 2 Co sub 2 Al and Gd sub 2 Co sub 2 Ga order ferromagnetically below 78.2 and 76 K, respectively, and the isothermal magnetisation in the ordered state (5 K) saturates completely to the same value for both compounds ( mu sub sat =6.6 mu sub B /Gd atom). The intermetallic compound Gd sub 14 Co sub 3 In sub 2.7 , on the contrary, is antiferromagnetic below T sub N = 37 K and reveals a metamagnetic transition at mu sub 0 H = 1.4 Tesla, detected also by AC susceptibility measurements. |
