Description
Summary:It has recently been shown that microwave heating can reduce the time for synthesising TiN by carbothermal reduction and nitridation. In particular, the TiO2/C mixture used as starting material initiates an effect denoted as the "self-burning phenomenon". High-purity TiO2 powders from four different commercial sources were used together with activated charcoal powder to synthesise TiN powders using this microwave-induced self-burning cyclical process. Self-burning, during which the observed temperature cycles with an approx 40 s frequency, was seen in all cases and lasted for 30 min. The particle size distribution of the reactant and product powders was measured. It was shown that, regardless of identical experimental conditions, the starting powder characteristics significantly affect the particle shape and size distribution of the TiN powders.
