Summary: | The luminescence process of Eu2+-doped Ba2SiO4 phosphor is characterized by the 4f65d RT 4f7 transition of Eu2+ working as an activator. The emission of Eu2+ based on the 4f65d RT 4f7 transition varies from ultraviolet to yellow, depending on the host lattice, covalency, the size of the cation, and the strength of crystal field. Generally, the Eu2+-doped Ba2SiO4 phosphor absorbs longer- wavelength ultraviolet and emits green light with a wavelength of about 504 nm. Recently, green light emitting phosphors such as Ba2SiO4:Eu2+, Ba2MgSi2O7:Eu2+, and Ba2ZnSi2O7:Eu2+ have been used for light emitting diodes (LEDs) which are typically used as illuminators, indicators, and displays. Studies on Eu2+-doped Ba2SiO4 phosphors have been performed by many researchers. Barry and Blasse et al. investigated the luminescence characteristics of Eu2+ ion in barium and strontium orthosilicates. Poort et al. explained the different emission of Eu2+ ion on two site (nine and ten coordination) of Ba2SiO4 with orthorhombic structure by comparing with the results of the Eu2+-doped orthophosphates. In this paper, we studied the luminescence behavior of Eu2+-doped Ba2SiO4 phosphor excited by the UV source. |
