Description
Summary:Automated storage and retrieval system technology based on intelligent, rail guided vehicles has recently been introduced as an alternative to traditional designs based on aisle-captive storage cranes. Analytical models are proposed to assess the performance and cost effectiveness of rail guided systems based on key system design variables including the number, depth and height of storage aisles and the vehicle and lift fleet sizes. The models provide a basis for developing system profiles useful in the pre-engineering phases of system design and can be used in assessing the viability of rail guided systems as an alternative to traditional automated storage and retrieval systems. The models are demonstrated for cost and performance based design problems.
