Description
Summary:This paper deals with the development of the selective removal of carious dentine with plastic abrasives. The hardness distribution of carious dentine and sound dentine was measured. Then 4 harmless plastic abrasives and a natural abrasive (walnut) with a similar hardness value as that of dentine were selected. After perforation tests using a dental abrasive jet machining equipment, it becomes clear that a polycarbonate resin abrasive is most likely to successfully perform selective removal without damage to sound dentine. The cutting tests of human carious dentine confirm that this method selectively removes only the carious portion.
