Characterization of Quartz Crystallinity in Naturally Occurring Clay Minerals Using Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Spectroscopy

The quartz contents of freshly ground quartz, ball clay and air floated ball clay were determined by XRD and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and the results compared. It is proposed that the infrared bands at 800-780 cm-1 may be used for the determination of qua...

Description
Summary:The quartz contents of freshly ground quartz, ball clay and air floated ball clay were determined by XRD and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and the results compared. It is proposed that the infrared bands at 800-780 cm-1 may be used for the determination of quartz in naturally-occurring clay minerals. The band at 780 cm-1 was particularly sensitive. There was agreement between the XRD and the DRIFTS results, with the latter offering the benefit of requiring only a very small sample (1 mg). 6 refs.
