Summary: | After 40 years of efforts to address inequities in HIV prevention and treatment, one of the most useful tools to emerge is a framework for outlining prevention and treatment services- the HIV care continuum. Briefly, the care continuum is a framework that identifies the steps, or "bars," a person can take from time of HIV diagnosis, treatment initiation, and retention in care, to achieve viral suppression (https://bit.ly/3MPscEQ). Utilizing this framework can also elucidate the pressure points at each stage of the continuum where inequities persist, causing widening of gaps that prevent people from progressing successfully from testing to treatment. Public health practitioners can employ the care continuum framework to serve as a model for what could have been an equity-based approach to respondingto COVID-19 and mpox and what should be an equity-based approach for future infectious disease outbreaks. |
