Summary:A Welsh native and nurse and midwife by training, she is Chair of the Independent Review of Maternity Services at the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, UK. Before her work in Nottingham, she chaired the high-profile Independent Review of Maternity Services at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust in 2017–22, the largest maternity enquiry in the history of the National Health Service involving 1862 families. Since the publication of their final report in 2022, which recommended actions locally and nationally, she says “We have made significant strides in the right direction. Austin Ugwumadu, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at St George's University Hospital, London, UK, who is a member of Ockenden's past and present independent review teams, speaks of Ockenden's “passion, energy, tenacity, and commitment” and says she “has the ability to bring people together, build an effective team, set objectives, and relentlessly seeks to achieve them.
