Summary: | We phase auto-oscillating sections of a multi-section linear accelerator using the beam-section interaction. The beam interacting with the accelerating structure produces a signal whose frequency is that of the accelerating bunch and so is equal to the resonant frequency of a reference section. We supply this signal to the klystron amplifier through a feedback loop choosing the attenuation, phase shift, and section frequency de-tuning so that each section's self-excited oscillations are phased with those of the reference section, thus ensuring efficient beam acceleration. We have constructed an equivalent circuit from whose simulated performance we have found the initial parameters for an experimental demonstration of a two-section continuous wave electron accelerator. |
