Description
Summary:Fourier transform infrared/attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy was used to study the early hydration of beta-dicalcium silicate prepared by mixing calcium oxide with silica obtained from rice hulls. The hydration of mixtures with water:cement (w:c) ratios of 0.40-0.70 was studied. Hydration was strongly dependent upon the w:c ratio, and it is proposed that hydration in cement occurs in two steps: chemically-controlled initial hydrolysis; and a slower second step of water diffusion into cement grains, which is diffusion-controlled. It was concluded that the transition between these two stages was best studied using the 1000 cm-1 silicate absorption peak. 13 refs.
