Potassium containing apatitic calcium phosphate cements

Summary: | Previously it has been shown that potassium containing nanoapatites can precipitate in the range 0.8 < Ca/P < 1.5, when mixtures of MCPM, CPP, CPSP and *a-TCP are mixed with water. In this study it is found that similar cement-like products are formed by using powders of CPP, CPSP and/or *a-TCP and mixing them with phosphoric acid or acetic acid or citric acid. Also, *a-TCP can be used with a solution of KH2PO4 and K2HPO4. Another possibility is a combination of CPP and/or CPSP and *a-TCP and KH2PO4. Setting times varied from 2 to 15 min. Compressive strengths after 3 days of immersion in 0.9% saline solution at 37DGC could go up to 35 MPa. In all these cases the cements contained potassium containing apatite in combination with calcium deficient hydroxyapatite. |
