The original purpose of this aid was to ensure Egypt's compliance with the peace agreement signed with Israel in 1978. However, Egypt no longer poses a threat to Israel and instead supports the blockade of Gaza. The real beneficiaries of this aid are the US arms manufacturing industry, as all military aid to Egypt is used to purchase weapons from US defense contractors. These weapons systems do not address Egypt's economic issues, such as poverty and inflation. Furthermore, Egypt has a poor human rights record under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, with limited free speech, arbitrary arrests, torture, and discrimination.
