Summary: | Emergency medical services (EMS) aims to reduce the elapsed time to respond to an emergency. The number and location of vehicles within the service area, directly affect the attainment of this goal. In this paper, we focus on a mathematical modeling approach for locating/allocating emergency vehicles and facilities in a manner that increases the number of calls that are answered within the 8-min national average. This model was applied to the EMS system in the city of Fayetteville, North Carolina, and results indicate that the average response time can be significantly improved through strategically allocating vehicles throughout the service area. |
