Description
Summary:The ballistic resistance of a particular ceramic to long-rod penetration of a metal/ceramic target (phenomenon known as "interface defeat") is not unique and largely depends on the nature of ceramic confinement and target configuration. Three interface defeat-based target configurations containing TiB2 discs cut from CERCOM armour-grade tiles, corresponding to an impacted, unprestressed disc, and prestressed discs with a single and a double impact, respectively, were examined by OM, SEM and TEM. Penetration (occurring by severe comminution/fracture and radial cracking) was seen for unprestressed single impact and prestressed double impact conditions, but not for the prestressed, single impact condition. Prestressing retarded fracture and comminution, but dislocation-induced ductility in the prestressed double impact disc is undesirable for penetrator dwell and interface defeat. 14 refs.
