A comparative study on metamagnetic transitions in half-doped Pr0.45La0.05Ca0.5MnO3 and Pr0.45Gd0.05Ca0.5MnO3 manganites

Half-doped Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 is an ABO3-type, charge-ordered antiferromagnetic system with a negligible A-site cation size disorder (sigma2). The A-site substitution by larger or smaller ions than Pr3+/Ca2+ in this system increases sigma2. We have studied and compared the sigma2 and cation size effects...

Description
Summary:Half-doped Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 is an ABO3-type, charge-ordered antiferromagnetic system with a negligible A-site cation size disorder (sigma2). The A-site substitution by larger or smaller ions than Pr3+/Ca2+ in this system increases sigma2. We have studied and compared the sigma2 and cation size effects on metamagnetic transitions by substituting 5 atomic percentage of isovalent larger ion La3+ or smaller ion Gd3+ at A-site in this system. We find that the La substitution induces successive sharp step-like metamagnetic transitions at low temperature, in contrast to a smooth metamagnetic transition induced by Gd substitution.
