Summary: | This has been a volatile year for aircraft operations. Although passenger levels have returned to their pre-September 11 levels, airlines have been severely affected by high fuel costs and the devastation wrought by hurricanes. The legacy carriers continue to be hit hard by rising fuel prices, high labor costs, and price wars. Since Pan Am and Eastern closed their doors in the 1990s, Southwest and other discount carriers have flourished while the legacy airlines have continued to struggle. US Airways, which declared bankruptcy in 2002 and 2004, has merged with more successful America West. United Airlines went into bankruptcy in 2002, and Delta and Northwest filed this year. |
