Summary: | The Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) published interview recommendations for the 2023–24 application cycle in which they advocate for virtual interviews with optional second look opportunities primarily to maintain equity and decrease cost for applicants.1 As we draft best practices for residency interviews, there is unquestionable merit in being conscientious of the financial hardship applicants face in addition to the burden of travel which pulls students and preliminary residents away from educational opportunities and patient care. Another important drawback included the challenge in differentiating programs; however, the proportion of respondents that felt comfortable ranking based solely on their virtual interview experience increased from 2021 to 2022 as did the proportion that felt confident in their post-interview impressions of the programs. [...]we should learn from the data gathered in the current study that the virtual platform does not eliminate the risk of bias in our selection processes. |
