Summary: | Pesticides are widely used in intensive modern agriculture and, because of their excessive and uncontrolled application, they are considered as important organic pollutants of the environment and chemical stressors (1). Therefore, it is essential to precisely evaluate and monitor their toxic effects. Bacteria can be used as biosensors to determine the toxicity of pesticides in different environmental media, including soils, sediments and waters (2). The goals of our work were to develop an adenosine triphosphate (ATP) bioluminescence method, using Escherichia coli, a non-luminescent bacterium, as a biosensor of the pesticide toxicity and to test it on four pesticides belonging to different chemical families. |
