Description
Summary:This article outlines the medically important arboviruses in Australia and suggests that the mosquito Culex annulirostris, recognized as a major vector, should be monitored in relation to water resources development. Studies of the Ross River dam near Townsville and of a rice-growing area near Mareeba in north Queensland confirm this opinion in view of high alphavirus activity. Previous and future relationships between biologists and policy makers are discussed, especially in the context of northern tropical Queensland.
