Summary: | The region of Assequins-Giesteira, in north central Portugal, has an important concentration of small electroplating industries which have been operating for about 10 years. Most factories dump their liquid and solid wastes directly on land, therefore large quantities of chromium, nickel, zinc and other contaminants are added to the surrounding soils. This study was undertaken to assess the enrichment levels and mobilization of Cr within the soil-water-plant system. In addition, the quantification of hexavalent chromium was attempted due to its environmental relevance. |
