Description
Summary:The Zeeman effect, magnetization and differential magnetic susceptibility are studied theoretically and experimentally for two Er compounds ErBa2Cu3O7-delta and ErVO4. An energy level crossing is shown to appear in ErBa2Cu3O7-delta and ErVO4 for external magnetic field H||[0 0 1] and [1 0 0], respectively, resulting in peaks of the differential magnetic susceptibility dM/dH and jumps in the magnetization M(H) curves at low temperatures. Various causes are analyzed which may decrease and smooth the magnetic anomalies noticeably for these paramagnets and make them difficult to observe experimentally.
