Summary: | Concentration and discrimination factors for Cd, Pb, Zn and Cu in benthos were estimated and are discussed with respect to concentrations in ambient water and surface sediments. The factors showed significant discrimination in favour of Zn versus Pb as well as for Cd versus Pb (especially with respect to surface sediment) in soft tissue of older specimens of
Mytilus edulis. The data suggest that this mollusc has a greater affinity for Cd than for Pb. Hence
Mytilus edulis may be less able to regulate the uptake of Cd compared with Pb from the ambient water and/or surface bottom sediment. |
