Description
Summary:The response of Paijanne lake in southern Finland to reductions in effluent discharges from pulp and paper mills was monitored between 1969 and 1989. Polluting discharges to the central part of the lake were reduced substantially by process changes at the Jamsankoski pulp and paper mills between 1969 and 1981. The major remaining threat to water quality in this part of the lake was eutrophication. Improvements in water quality, particularly the oxygen balance, were achieved in the Aanekoski watercourse and the northern part of the lake by improved effluent treatment at the Aanekoski pulp mill, though eutrophic conditions remained a problem in the area.
