Description
Summary:Alum and cationic polyacrylamide were usually used together in the paper making process, and experiments were carried out on the adsorption and desorption of the polyacrylamide in contact with wood pulp fibres. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of the polyacrylamide was considerably reduced in the presence of even low concentrations of alum, but addition of alum did not result in desorption of previously adsorbed polyacrylamide from saturated fibres. The implications of these findings for pollution of surface waters receiving discharges of paper mill waste waters are indicated.
