Description
Summary:Substances of high molar mass (greater than 1000 g per mol) in acid and alkaline kraft pulp bleaching wastewaters were studied using gel permeation chromatography. These substances represented 65-75 per cent of ultraviolet-absorbing components in alkaline effluents, and 20 per cent in acid effluents. Lignin was the precursor of these compounds in the alkaline stage, and lignin and carbohydrates were the precursors in the acid stage. The substances from both stages were further characterized by infrared spectroscopy, and their toxicity to Daphnia magna was determined; in general, these compounds were non-toxic.
