Summary: | Reductive or oxidative processes were frequently used to remove colour from wastewaters from the manufacture of synthetic dyes before discharge, but little was known about the resulting new compounds formed. Reductive cleavage was applied to 16 commercial azo dyes, using either sodium hydrosulphite or stannous chloride, and identified the reduction products by high-performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The chemical structures of the dyes with their names, colour index, and molecular weight are included and the reaction products identified are tabulated. There was almost complete reduction of the azo bond to form aromatic amines. Tin chloride was the more powerful reducing agent, and produced the greater number of products. Results obtained from application of this procedure to reduced industrial waste sludge extracts are tabulated. There are 38 references. |
