Summary: | Data on the occurrence of hazardous substances from the EC black' list in influents, effluents, and sludge at 6 municipal sewage works and in the wastewaters from 59 industries in the Netherlands are presented in a series of tables and discussed. Volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons in sewage originated mainly from industrial discharges, and the concentrations present fluctuated considerably. Chlorophenols, gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were present in sewage and many industrial wastewaters at low background concentrations. PCB and fluoranthene were constantly found in sewage sludge, and hexachlorobenzene, trichlorophenol, tetrachlorophenol, pentachlorophenol, and benzofluoranthene were also present. The estimated overall percentage removals of a number of types of compound during sewage treatment are shown in a table. |
