Summary: | A number of pulp mills using chlorine bleaching discharged their wastewaters into the Strait of Georgia, B.C., and fisheries in the area had been closed since dioxins and furans were detected in sediments and edible marine organisms. The concentrations of a dioxin, a furan and a polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) in 3 dated sediment cores from the area are reported. The dioxin and the PCB were probably of atmospheric origin, but the furan was concentrated near the pulp mills and had been accumulating in the sediments since about 1965. There are 51 references. |
