Summary: | Pollution levels and distribution of several trace metals in 5 different creek sediments of the United Arab Emirates along the Arabian gulf were determined. Most metals increased in concentration towards the inner-most parts of the creek where they received most municipal and industrial wastewater. Mean levels of chromium, copper, manganese and nickel were 11.57, 18.34, 96.62 and 27.0 ug per g, respectively, and lower than concentrations reported by most workers. However, levels of cadmium, cobalt and zinc were higher with mean concentrations of 5.54, 10.88 and 77.10 ug per g, respectively. Recommendations from elevated levels of metals and organic materials found in the creek are that discharges containing these compounds should be minimized. |
