Summary: | During the 19th Century, the J. J. Whites chemical works at Shawfield in southeast Glasgow was one of the world's largest producers of chrome. The works were in operation up until 1967. Chromite ore processing residues arising from the works were used as infill material across large tracts of south-east Glasgow. Glasgow City Council (GCC) identified 15 sites where elevated concentrations of hexavalent chromium extended to depths of 10 m in places. Over half of the samples recovered from the 15 sites had concentrations of hexavalent chromium in excess of 25 mg kg super(-1) although concentrations in the thousands of milligram per kilogram were not uncommon (Table I). Several of the sites closed based upon the findings of the investigation. |
