Description
Summary:An expanded bed anaerobic reactor with granular activated carbon (GAC) as the support material was used to evaluate the effects of hydraulic retention time, sludge age and organic loading rate on the treatment performance for coal gasification wastewater. The toxicity of the raw feed necessitated periodic replacement of the bed material; the initial results concerned the minimal replacement rate needed to maintain adequate treatment at a loading of 11 g COD per g GAC per day. During subsequent tests of a bench-scale reactor at a constant 35C, very high COD removal efficiencies and methane conversion efficiencies were obtained at hydraulic retention times down to 7 h.
