Description
Summary:The ceramic pigment BaFe2O4, with iron as the chromophore ion, and barium as net modifier, was studied. Synthesis was by the polymeric precursor method. After calcination at different temperatures, XRD, IR spectroscopy, surface area by BET, SEM, UV-vis spectroscopy and colorimetric analysis, using CIELab system, were used for characterisation. The soft chemical synthesis method led to a highly crystalline material after calcination at 700 C, while usual methods required higher temperatures ( > 850 C) or led to secondary phases. The powders were applied on ceramic pieces to evaluate the behaviour of the system when added to a glaze. The pigments had a dark brown colour, with homogeneous glaze surfaces. 33 refs.
