Description
Summary:Samples were taken from 10 waste lagoons of the Vitkovice Steelworks Enterprise. They were homogenized, mixed with water, shaken for 6 h, settled for 18 h, then centrifuged. The extracts were tested by the Microtox method employing Photobacterium phosphoreum to give EC50 values after 5, 15 and 30 minutes. The toxicities of the leachates were widely different and in 4 cases a stimulation of bacterial activity was observed. For some extracts, toxicity decreased if the time of sedimentation increased, indicating that classical toxicity tests lasting 48 h could provide false results.
