Summary:The tropical coast of Brazil, which extends from the Maranhense Gulf to the Paraiba do Sul coastal plain, comprises three sectors: the northern, northeastern, and eastern sectors. The oceanographic parameters of the coastal environment are described in terms of the coastal climate and currents, and extensive data are presented on the extent of sedimentation, the major marine and coastal habitats, and coral reefs. The major environmental concerns of the region are elucidated, and efforts to enhance its environmental quality are discussed.
