FT-IR and EPR spectroscopic studies of B2O3-Bi2O3-Gd2O3 glasses

Glasses from xGd2O3?(100-x)[B2O3?Bi2O3] system with 0 < or = x < or = 10 mol% have been prepared and than studied by means of FTIR absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. FT-IR data indicate in the studied glasses the presence of the BO3, BO4, BiO6 and BiO3 units and...

Description
Summary:Glasses from xGd2O3?(100-x)[B2O3?Bi2O3] system with 0 < or = x < or = 10 mol% have been prepared and than studied by means of FTIR absorption and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. FT-IR data indicate in the studied glasses the presence of the BO3, BO4, BiO6 and BiO3 units and its proportion dependence of the Gd2O3. The EPR spectra of these glasses reveal resonance sites with an unexpected high crystalline field in addition to the 'U' spectrum, typical for Gd3+ ions in disordered systems. These absorption lines are due to the Gd3+ ions that can partially replace Br3+ ions from the host glass matrix and could play the network unconventional former role in the studied glasses.
