Summary: | An attempt was made to develop multifunctional composites based on aluminium and titanium intermetallic compounds reinforced with ceramic particles using reactive sintering. The objectives of the work are explained, looking at the role of reaction synthesis in fabricating materials with properties that cannot be achieved using monolithics. The fabrication routes and current state-of-the-art are considered. The research work had six goals related to the synthesis and testing of reinforced intermetallics. The work carried out to achieve these goals is outlined in detail. The scientific relevance and potential uses of the multifunctional composites, e.g. in the automobile industry, are finally considered. 20 refs. |
