Summary: | At Dog Tooth Bend, the New Falls City ran aground, as did the Aleck Scott, which was bound upriver. Memoranda-Crescent City left New Orleans Sunday, 1st instant at 10 A M, with 520 tons of freight, and no passengers, (the latter a very unusual admission.) Business brisk, freights plenty, strenuous efforts making to obtain twenty cents in due consideration of a low stage of water. At 5:30 P.M., with 358 tons of freight; 93 cabin and 212 deck passengers; five minutes the Diana landed a passenger at 12 mile point; laid seventeen minutes at Boone Quarro Point, waiting for a family to come on board; landed two passengers at Plaquermine, and passed the Diana just below Bayou Sara; laid fifteen minutes in Palestine Bend, waiting for passengers; made five passenger landings between Natchez and Vicksburg: waited there three hours and ten minutes for the cars, the Diana going on without a minute's delay; discharged at Providence 50 bbls lime; at Greenville 100 bbls pork; made seventeen passenger landings and beat the Diana's time to Memphis in two hours and five minutes; laid one hour at Memphis discharging freight, and made the run from Memphis to Cairo inside of twenty-four hours, including three freight landings, and against a big rise; laid two hours at Cairo, and lost six hours at Devil's Island, wind bound; making the trip from New Orleans to St. Louis, running time, four days, two hours and twenty-five minutes.6 There was nothing mentioned in the papers about the Crescent Citys next trip to New Orleans. First night out expected to land but did not. |
