Summary: | Laxminarayan spent the first few years of his life in Kampala, Uganda, being raised by his mother, a school teacher, and father, a hospital physician at Makerere. Keith Klugman, Director of Pneumonia and Pandemic Preparedness at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, comments that it is “extraordinary to have an economist with such insight into the epidemiology and drivers of resistance of AMR pathogens” and credits Laxminarayan for his use of “economic models to drive data on the impact of AMR, especially in low and middle-income countries”. The Series lays out global targets for 2030: a 10% reduction in mortality from AMR, a 20% reduction in inappropriate human antibiotic use, while ensuring all patients in need get access to effective antibiotics, and a 30% reduction in inappropriate animal antibiotic use. |
