MA-SHS of NbC and NbB2 in air from the Nb/B/C powder mixtures
Powder mixtures of Nb-B-C in the molar ratios of 1:1:1, 2:2:1, 3:2:2 and 3:4:1 were mechanically activated by grinding for 15-180 min using a planetary ball mill. Two Nb powders were used, one with a particle size of 5-50 micron, and the other with a particle size of 50-130 micron. The mixtures spon...

Summary: | Powder mixtures of Nb-B-C in the molar ratios of 1:1:1, 2:2:1, 3:2:2 and 3:4:1 were mechanically activated by grinding for 15-180 min using a planetary ball mill. Two Nb powders were used, one with a particle size of 5-50 micron, and the other with a particle size of 50-130 micron. The mixtures spontaneously ignited on exposure to air, forming NbC and NbB2 by SHS. Mechanical activation was strongly dependent upon the Nb particle size, the composition of the powder mixture and the weight ratio of powder:balls. The SHS product exhibited a fine, homogeneous microstructure. 7 refs. |
