Description
Summary:Most of the global cases in 2024 have been reported from the WHO Region of the Americas: the Pan American Health Organization stated that as of Sept 5, over 11·5 million suspected cases have been reported in the region so far, a cumulative incidence of 1206 per 100 000 population. [...]the supply is not enough to immunise all individuals at risk, and uptake has been low. Since passive surveillance involving case reports in the absence of differential laboratory testing can result in inaccurate data, active surveillance supported by diagnostic laboratory results provides more accuracy and therefore better outbreak control, but requires greater resources. Since mosquitos have become resistant to traditional insecticides in some areas, successful control of their numbers includes “elimination of breeding sites through clean-up campaigns, treating open containers of water with larvicides, application of adulticides, and education”, commented Paz-Bailey.
