A pragmatic screening tool for identification of chronic hypercapnia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

•Chronic hypercapnia is common in patients with COPD.•Lower FEV1 and higher serum bicarbonate are associated with hypercapnia in COPD.•A blood gas is indicated if FEV1 ≤ 40 % predicted or serum bicarbonate ≥33 mmol/L.
