Summary: | The present study deals with the estimation of aboveground biomass (AGB) using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in a highly complex mangrove assemblage of Lothian Island, Indian Sundarbans. A comparative analysis between the SAR datasets was also performed to check whether the L band in ALOS-PALSAR-2 data has any advantages over the C band in RISAT-1 and Sentinel-1 data. Empirical equations available in the literature were used to calculate plot-level biomass, which was then regressed with backscatter values produced from SAR datasets to obtain an AGB map of Lothian Island. AGB in Lothian Island ranged from 1.15 t/ha to 79.83 t/ha with an average value of 20.23 t/ha. Backscatter generated from RISAT-1 RH, Sentinel VH and ALOS-PALSAR-2 HV and VH performed best when regressed with field observations with

values of 0.91, 0.83, 0.78 and 0.97 respectively. This research could be useful as a valuable input in carbon mapping and could serve as a baseline report of blue carbon stock availability on Lothian Island, Sundarbans. |
