Summary:Inspection of austenitic welds is particularly difficult because the materials tend to form anisotropic grains resulting in an inhomogeneous structure whose specific properties are unknown. A reliable method of ultrasonic NDE would remove the need for radiography, reducing inspection time and cost. In this paper, an established weld model is transformed into 'Fermat space' using a developed ray-tracing algorithm, where a previously anisotropic and inhomogeneous material appears to be uniformly isotropic and homogeneous when viewed from a predetermined location. This transformation process is explained, and properties of this new space are introduced.
