Summary: | Sol-gel process has been used to prepare low-cost TiB2 and TiC gels and powders. Citric acid is used to chelate titanium and boron precursors and ethylene glycol for reaction with this chelate to form organic esters. Thermal behaviour of homogeneous gel and the relationship between processing parameters and microstructure of powders were determined. XRD and Raman spectroscopy were used to detect changes during crystallisation. Carbothermal reduction of the gel revealed the formation of TiB2 and TiC at 1200 C for 2 h. Well-shaped ball-like TiC crystals with a particle size about 200 nm and hexagonal plate-like TiB2 grains with a particle size about 2 micron and thickness 200 nm were formed at 1300 C for 1 h. 17 refs. |
