Summary:In this work we present a theoretical description of parametric sound generation in a water-filled interferometer, extending previous models of nonlinear acoustical resonators to include the coupling with the generated second harmonic. The stationary solutions both above and below the threshold are obtained and discussed. The solutions are compared with experimentally measured values, with an excellent agreement. The novel effects induced by the second harmonic (e.g. bistability or hysteresis) and its relation with complex temporal dynamics and extended pattern formation are discussed.
